Allowances: Ex-Gov Senators At Loggerheads With Gbenga Daniel !!

Crisis is brewing in the Senate following the letter that the senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly, wrote to Governor Dapo Abiodun last week demanding the stoppage of his allowances as a former governor of Ogun State.

In the letter, Daniel asked that his N676, 376.95 monthly pension be stopped, but made no mention of his other perks as an ex-governor, including allowances running into several millions of naira as well as periodically provided utility vehicles.

Senators who, like Daniel, are ex-governors are said to have queried why he (Daniel) chose to escalate an issue of mere compliance with the law and present it as a matter of moral principles.

The senators were said to have been embarrassed by Daniel’s letter because it caused their respective constituents to ask them if they had a conscience and were going to relinquish their pensions and allowances too, whereas they had already complied with the law without making a any noise about it.

One of the senators was quoted to have said: “Everyone is now asking us, ‘See what your colleague from Ogun State has done. Why can’t you too do the same thing?’

“I found this to be totally confounding because as ex-governors, we cannot earn any pensions from our respective states while serving as senators and drawing salaries and allowances.

“Are we to begin publishing advertorials in the newspapers now, saying we have complied with the Code of Conduct for public officers. Are we expected not to have complied?”

Also, the senators were said to have pointedly asked Daniel if he was truly earning millions in allowances and why he chose to omit that fact in his letter published on his Twitter page.
